Blick in die Lampenstube

Lamps room

A light in the night. The miner's lamp.

For miners, working lamps were essential for survival. They were often the only source of light in their workplace. Safety lamps indicated whether the air was ‘clean’ or contained explosive methane. However, miner's lamps were and still are sought-after collector's items.

The exhibition ‘A Light in the Night’ gives visitors to a darkroom a sensory impression of what miners could see with the help of their lamps. It traces the function and development of mining lamps in the 20th century using historical mining lamps and shows the work of the lamp master and his employees in a reconstructed workshop. They ensured that the lamps were charged, maintained or repaired and functioned properly. The exhibition also illustrates that the lamp was not only a work tool but also became a cult object, and provides insights into the cultural history of the miner's lamp in the 20th century with numerous examples from art and everyday culture.
