Work castle
The Zollern Colliery's Day Facilities
Duration: 1 / 1.5 hours
Participants: maximum 25
Cost: 45 Euro plus admission
With the construction of the Zollern II/IV colliery, its owner, Gelsenkirchener Bergwerks AG, became the largest mining company. The owners' self-confidence and desire for prestige demanded a facility that was representative in design and equipped with the latest technology. The castle-like facility became the much-admired model colliery of its time. The open-cast mines fascinate visitors with their architecture and original machinery and equipment from other mines. The tour provides information about the history of the company, work processes, accident hazards, occupational safety, training and company social policy. You can choose between a 60-minute and a 90-minute guided tour.
We also offer this tour for people with visual impairments.
The tour can also be booked in English.
Landwehr Colony
Tour of the settlement
Duration: 1.5 hours
Participants: maximum 25
Cost: 45 euros
In front of the colliery gates lies the Landwehr colony, a garden city-style settlement for miners and employees. Like the Zollern colliery, it was planned and built as a model facility at the turn of the century. After it was decommissioned, it largely retained its original character. The tour highlights important aspects of the social policy of large mining companies and the close spatial connection between living and working in the era of high industrialisation.
Note: We recommend combining this tour with the ‘A Castle of Work’ tour. The combined tour takes approximately 2 hours (65 Euro).
Languages: We offer the combined tour in German, English and French.
