With the construction of the Zollern II/IV Colliery, its owner, Gelsenkirchener Bergwerks AG, became the largest mining company. The owners' confidence and desire for prestige demanded a facility  with commensurate design, outfitted with the latest technology. The castle-like facility became a highly admired colliery of its time. The open-cast mines intrigue visitors with their architectural ,design, original machinery and equipment from other mines. This tour provides information about the history of the company, work processes, accident hazards, occupational safety, training and company social policy. You can choose between the 60-minute and 90-minute guided tour.

In front of the colliery gates lies the Landwehr colony, a park-like settlement for miners and employees. Like the Zollern Colliery, it was planned and built as a model facility at the turn of the century. After it was decommissioned, it largely retained its original character. This tour highlights important aspects of the social policy of large mining companies and the close spatial connection between life and work in the era of high industrialisation.
